Survived by daughters Rita (Duke) Vierth, Linda Taskey, Karen (Charles) Spath and Kathey Cunningham; son Troy (Ann) Cunningham; 16 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; sister LaRay H. Wittl; brothers Lloyd D. and Keith L. Smith; numerous nieces and nephews. She was a member of the Manito Ward LDS Church. SKAUGSTAD, Annette C.
(Age 87)

Passed away on January 6, 2009 in Coeur d' Alene, ID. She is survived by her two daughters, Gail Sahli and Darylene Lindberg (Tuffy); two sons, Dick Skaugstad (Kathy) and Bob Skaugstad (Lana); 12 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. PIRELLO, Wirt

Wirt Pirello was born on March 15, 1917 in Greenacres, WA. His parents came to the United States from Sicily, Italy in 1903. Wirt had three brothers and four sisters, all of whom grew up in the valley. Wirt was a hard working man who lived with integrity. He loved his work whether it was working on his family home, or working in the field. Many knew Wirt as a dependable and punctual man. He was someone who lived by his word and believed that a handshake was as good as a written word. He successfully ran his business, Wirt's Dirt for over 50 years. People looked forward to seeing his smiling face under the rim of his cowboy hat, as he delivered dirt all around Spokane in his big Ford truck. Wirt passed away on January 5, 2009. He lived to be 91 years old and was surrounded by his loving family who shared his life. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Lurene Pirello; his five children: David (Gloria) Pirello of Veradale, Dennis (Lois) Pirello of Enumclaw WA, Kris Pirello (Steve) of Prosser WA, Kevin Pirello of Veradale, and Lisa (Terry) Hissong of Richland WA; 13 grandchildren; and 18 great-grand-children. Wirt touched the hearts and lives of many. His family knew him to be a strong and gentle man who had a generous heart, unwavering loyalty, and he worked hard his entire life. His faith and non-judgmental spirit inspired those around him to live life to its fullest. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, January 9th, 11:00 AM at St. Mary's Catholic Church. BURLEY, Ariel Faye
(Age 83)

Passed away quietly on January 4, 2009 in Spokane, WA. She was born on October 15, 1925 in Porthill, ID to Harley and Annie King. Ariel was a Spokane resident for over 60 years. For the majority of those years she was a homemaker, enjoying gardening, knitting and golf; but, she also worked for a number of businesses including Graybar Electric and the Old National Bank Building. She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years Howard O. Burley, and sister, Anita Ellis. She is survived by sons Wayne (Nancy) Burley of Spokane, WA and Lorne (Wendy) Burley of Newman Lake, WA; grandsons Mason (Laurel) Burley of Spokane, WA and Todd (Tricia) Burley of Seattle, WA; great-grandchildren Wyatt and Chloe Burley; sisters Jeanette King, Naomi (Jerry) Lund, Vonnie Hubbell, Roberta (Ralph) McDonald, Sonja (Manuel) Estella and numerous nieces and nephews. LOCKE, Stephen Dennis "Denny"

Lost his 19 month battle with cancer on January 4, 2009. He was born February 2, 1941 in Miami, Florida. For 32 years Denny was the beloved husband of Joan Locke; devoted father of Nancy Locke (with his first granddaughter due in April) and devoted father of James Locke. He is also survivied by his mother, Nancy Godwin Locke; and sister Nancy Catherine and John Gambil, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Howard; maternal and fraternal grandparents. He attended Pascack High School, Georgia Tech and received his degree in Broadcast Journalism from the University of Florida. For 30 years Denny was airfield manager at Spokane International Airports. He retired from Spokane International on March 10, 2000 and began working at Fairchild Air Force Base on March 13, 2000. The family would like to thank caregiver Brian Gertsch with Hospice of Spokane, caregiver Casey Johnson, and the marvelous staff and doctors of Rockwood Oncology (Dr. Jay Wittenkeller), and Dr. Lee and staff of Radiation Oncology. A special thank you also to friends, neighbors, the Giems, Brandts, Vias, Hawleys, the retired employees of Spokane International Airport, Lee and Charlotte Holford, Nancy Godsil, Teresa and Dan Smith, Cheryl and Jeff Ables,Christi Jones in Civilian Air Force Personnel Office and everyone at Fairchild AFB. BRAUN, Samuel F.

Died January 3, 2009, at the Odessa Memorial Healthcare Center. He was born November 7, 1939, to Sam and Freda Braun. He grew up on a farm North of Ritzville and attended school at Ritzville grade school and high school. He graduated in 1958. The summer after his graduation he worked for the city of Ritzville and after that he worked for a farmer in the summer months and for Culligan Soft Water during the winter. In April of 1962, Sam married Sharon Mills. During their first year of married life, they lived in San Francisco where Sam was stationed in the Army. Their first child, William Samuel (Bill), was born just before Sam was ordered to go to Germany. Sharon and Bill moved to Odessa, and Sam went off to Germany. Kerry Lynn was born while Sam was still in Germany. After leaving the Army, Sam returned to Odessa and went to work for Jerry Schafer on the farm. Son Steven Todd was born in the following years. Sam followed Schafer into the irrigation business and in 1980 bought the business from him. The business became Water-West, with Steve joining Sam in 1989 to help with the business until Sam retired in 2006. Sam was active in town government, serving 10 years on the town council and 4 years as mayor. He was also active with the Economic Development Council and was a member of Masonic Lodge #156 for 25 years, serving as a district deputy and past Master of the lodge. He was a member of the Heritage church, serving on the pastor search committee, and assistant moderator. Sam and Sharon enjoyed traveling, spending time in Mexico, Hawaii, Alaska and on the Oregon coast. Sam also enjoyed fishing with Sharon and his sons, Bill and Steve. Sam was diagnosed with cancer in April of 2008, putting up a good fight for six months before the cancer overcame him. According to the family, Sam valued his family above all, and he will be missed by all his family and friends. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Sharon; his children, Bill (and Audry) Braun, Kerry Palmer, Steve (and Mandi) Braun; his grandchildren, Samantha Palmer, Luke Palmer, Riley Braun, Meaghan Johnson, Mackenze Braun and Steven Braun; his brothers, Jerry (and Mary) Braun, Mike Braun and Sue Flinck; his uncle Howard Braun; aunt Marie Braun; sisters in-law Kathy (and Bruce) Rogers, Patty (and George) Nauert, Trudy Mills and Joan and Bob McClain; brother in- law Gary (and Billie) Mills and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Celebration of life services will be held at the Heritage Church in Odessa, Saturday, January 10, 2009, at 11 a.m. Memorials may be made to the Heritage Church or the Odessa Healthcare Foundation.

CHAPMAN, Howard M. A.
(Age 94)

Was born on the Deer Park family farm in Stevens County on February 4, 1914, and passed away January 3, 2009 in Spokane. He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Gertrude R. (Butt). He is survived by his children Richard (Lucy) Chapman, Diana (Dave) Johnston, Juli (Garey) Boone, William (Pailott) Chapman, and Alice Chapman; 19 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren. He and his brother-in-law built Jurgens Road in Stevens County. With his brother Theodore, they drove school buses for Nine Mile Falls. Howard loved his work in the woods and was highly skilled in all areas of logging, a true woodsman for over 30 years. He was a self-taught craftsman, designed, and built many of his tools of trade throughout his life. He owned his own business, Chappie's Mower and Grinding Works for 23 years and would supplement through the winter months with selling firewood and snow removal. He loved operating equipment of all kinds and was always helping family, friends, and neighbors. After retiring from Chappie's, he worked as a tree trimmer's assistant and advisor. He loved the outdoors and loved fishing and hunting. We will all miss his can do spirit. A Memorial Service will be held at Heritage Funeral Home, 508 N. Government Way, Spokane, Saturday, January 10th at 1:00 pm.

SOLES, Dennis G.
(Age 65)

Went to be with his Lord and Savior on January 3, 2009. He is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Lyla Soles, of Deer Park, WA; by his children: Jeff (Jeanne) Soles, Denise (Jeremy) Steen, and Brian (Shawna) Soles; by his grandchildren: Christopher, Mariah, Morgan, Dylan, Jaylin, Shianne, Hunter, and Andrew; by his brothers, Daryl (Louise) Soles and Ed (Tina) Soles; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. He is preceded in death by his mother and father, Hazel and Edward Soles, and by his sister, Myrna Kamps. Dennis was born in Vancouver, WA in 1943. He graduated from Lewis and Clark High School in Spokane in 1961. He then enlisted in the United States Navy, serving from 1961 through 1965 on board the U.S.S. Worden and the U.S.S. Mahan. Shortly after his discharge, he began working for Kaiser Aluminum, retiring from there in 1993. He enjoyed horse racing, fishing, and golfing. He will be greatly missed by all who loved him. Visitation for Dennis will be held on Thursday, January 8, 2009, from 12:00 Noon until 4:00 PM at HAZEN AND JAEGER VALLEY FUNERAL HOME, 1306 N. PINES RD, SPOKANE VALLEY, WA. Funeral services will be on Friday, January 9, 2009 at 10:00 AM at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Pines Cemetery. FRICKE, Lucille Alma

On January 2, 2009 Lucille passed away and was called back to heaven as she is rejoined with our family and friends who prepared her way. Lucille was born November 21, 1925 as the first born to Sylvena A. Monti Vigil and Gregory L. Anderson in Pattaya City, Thailand, Gail S. and Mike R. Frick of Port Angeles, WA, Kay J. and Al J. Slahtasky of Pasco, WA, Anna M. Anderson from Spokane, WA and a sister Leone M. Vigil from Suffolk, VA. The loving grandchildren are (Edie and Gregory) Jeannie and Colin Stamford of England, Jeffrey W. Anderson of Airway Heights, WA, (Robert D. Anderson) Alex of Omaha, NE, Nick of Princeton, NJ., Wade of Reno, NV, Kyle of Tampa, FL, and Reid Anderson of Omaha, NE (Gail and Mike) Joel and Michelle Frick of Tenino, WA, (Kay and Al) John and Melissa Slahtasky ,six great-grandhildren and numerous neighborhood children who called her grandma. Born March 21, 1919 to Louis and Madeline Steinke in Denver, CO. Passed away January 2, 2009 in Spokane, WA. Dorothy enjoyed singing with fellow seniors. She had a great sense of humor and always enjoyed a good joke. COMBS, Rayme S.

December 28th 1927-January 1st 2009
Rayme was born in Kellogg, Idaho to Naomi and Lansford Ray Stebbins. She grew up in the small neighboring mining town of Wardner. Her mother Naomi, was an Idaho State Representative. Her adoring father "Ray," was a Bunker Hill mine engineer and mayor of Wardner. She enrolled in the College of Puget Sound in 1946 (Univ. of Puget Sound). In her sophomore year she became engaged to Herbert R. Combs; a tall, handsome man from Eatonville, Washington who had just returned from the European Theatre of World War Two. Herb was the love of her life and she kept her love for him and for their four sons until she drew her last breath on the first day of this New Year, 2009. The young couple built a new home in the north end of Tacoma and quickly outgrew it with the birth of their sons; Christopher in 1955, followed by Marc, Mitch and Jon. Herb worked as Production Manager at Hooker Chemicals. Rayme, wife and mother, was outnumbered but not often out-maneuvered. The family enjoyed camping, picnicking, fishing and being together. They were active in church. After Herb's unexpected death in 1970, Rayme went to work in banking and finished raising four boys ages 7 through 15. She rose to the challenge, never losing her sense of humor and determination to do right by her sons and husband. As her boys married, she became friend and supporter to her daughter-in-laws. Her gregarious, cheerful, capable, nurturing personality and her sense of humor will be missed greatly. Mother, grandmother, mother-in-law, friend, we will always love you. Rayme is survived by: Christopher and Lesley Combs and their daughter Katherine; Marc and Pamela Combs and their sons Ben and Chris; Mitch and Julie Combs and their children Josh, Chelsea, Jessica, Luke, and John; Jon and Colleen Combs and their sons Ethan, Morgan and Peyton; Her brother Collin Stebbins and her sister Patricia Smith. LEIFER, Clyde Laverne

Passed away January 1, 2009 in the presence of his loving family after a long and wonderful life. He was born January 16, 1918 at Sunset, Washington to Irvin and Anna (Mills) Leifer and grew up on the family farm in Pine City where he farmed until he retired. He married Helen Gordon in December 1941 and they just celebrated their 67th year of marriage. Clyde's greatest joy was in being with his family and friends. He took pride in teaching his children about farming and training the ponies. He loved sharing celebrations with all in his family. He enjoyed ball games and the post game "discussions." And he especially enjoyed the little children and babies. Fishing with his friends was also very special for him. Clyde was preceded in death by his son John Leifer, grandson Lance Leifer, brothers Burdette and Bob Leifer, sisters Ione Bridges and Ina Lynch, and recently deceased sister-in-law Dorothy Leifer. DRESSEN, Garry E.
(Age 68)

He now rests in the loving arms of the Lord. A devoted Husband, Father, Grandfather and Great grandfather; Beloved Son and Brother peacefully passed away December 29, 2008 in Portland, OR. Garry was born on February 25, 1940 in Spokane, WA the son of Victor and Evelyn (Hammel) Dressen. Garry spent most of his childhood in Washington State. He would often muse over his many adventures as a youth. Active in sports, he attended Gonzaga Prep where he graduated in 1958. Garry enlisted in the Navy that same year and served aboard the USS Lexington and was on duty during the Cuban missile crises. He spent eight years in the Navy and was discharged April 1966. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and The Good Conduct Medal although he would argue the latter. He took great pride in his service to his country. His greatest joy was in recalling the courtship of his wife of 48 years, Colleen (Kelly). They were married on August 27, 1960 at St. Ann's Church in Spokane and lived in the Northwest raising their family. Garry found success in the sales field and he owned and operated a video store in Yakima as well. He enjoyed golfing and visiting with family and friends. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and was dearly devoted to his Lord and Savior. If there was one thing that Garry found most rewarding, it was spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Never content to stay idle, he would take the grandkids hiking, fishing, or to the beach whenever they had the opportunity. Garry is Survived by his loving wife, Colleen Dressen of Portland, OR; sons Shawn Dressen of Spokane, WA and Troy (DeeDee) Dressen of Otis Orchards, WA; daughter Kimberly (Kieth) Mattoon of Portland, OR; sister Delores Hovey of Portland, OR; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Phyllis Hellervik, and his daughter Amber Dressen (His little angel). HEPTON, Clara Anna (Dziuk)
(Age 93)

Passed away on December 29, 2008 at her home on Asotin Creek surrounded by loving family and caregivers.

Clara was born February 20, 1915 in Spokane, WA., to Tom and Mary Schmidt Dziuk. She was the middle child with an older sister, Agnes, and a younger brother, Jim. She graduated from North Central High School in Spokane and married Virgil John Hepton in May of 1936. Three children were soon added to the family, Robert, Patricia and David. The couple farmed at Greenacres, WA., for almost 50 years until Virgil's death in 1984. Mom continued to raise cattle and hay with the help of her son, Bob.

Mom will forever be remembered as a gracious hostess and a true lady of many talents. She was an excellent seamstress who could sew anything from bridesmaid's dresses to coats for her grandchildren. She enjoyed playing bridge and pinochle. For many years, she was a hostess for Welcome Wagon in the Spokane Valley. Designing houses and drawing her own plans were a special talent she loved. She planned and helped build eight houses over the years, living in each for awhile, then selling them for a nice profit which allowed her to start over again.

A stroke and several falls neccessitated her move to Asotin to live with Bob and Judy in 2002. Mom was able to live out her life in her beautiful Park Model home next to our house where she could enjoy the deer, wild turkeys and numerous other birds. She was blessed to have wonderful caregivers who loved her and kept her comfortable these past three years.

Survivors include, Robert and wife Judy Hepton of Asotin, Granddaughter, Jackie and husband Dwight Fleming of Enterprise, OR., Grandson John and wife Jodi, and their children Jocelyn and Jordan Hepton, of Nampa, ID., and Grandson Jeff and wife Tiffany, and their children Jailynn and Jenissa Hepton of East Wenatchee, WA., and son, David Hepton of Spokane. Sister, Agnes Barrie of Kent, WA., and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Patricia, and her brother, Jim Dziuk.

A service will be held in the Spokane Valley on Friday, January 9, at 11:00 at the St. Joseph chapel and cemetery with a meal and reminiscing time to follow. Mom always enjoyed and supported her grandchildren's 4-H and FFA years and with that in mind, in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Asotin County Livestock Building Fund, P.O. Box 370, Asotin, WA 99402.

HILLEY, Sharon Ruth

Born May 31, 1939 in Spokane, WA. Passed away December 28, 2008. Survived by her daughter Shannon Hall and three grandchildren (Renn, Lauryn, KayCie), brother Gerald Powers and wife Elaine Powers and numerous friends. A celebration of her life will be held January 10, 2009, 11:30 am at 13492 Bighorn Canyon Rd., Rathdrum, ID, Golden Spike Estate Rec Room.

HANSEN, Karen Marie (Dalrymple)

Karen passed away on December 25, 2008. She is the daughter of Harold Edward and Claire Marie Hansen. She is survived by her mother Marie; daughters Jan and Eileen; and brother Dick; children Tom and Kim; and grandchildren Samantha, Melissa and Katie Rose; and her three cats. A Celebration of her Life will be held on her birthday, April 9, 2009 and we will scatter her ashes at that time. We'll miss you daughter, sister, mother, grandmother.

NELSON, Shirley June

Born September 14,1920 in Spokane, Washington passed away December 22, 2008. She is survived by her son, Rick Nelson, daughter-in-law Leslie, granddaughters Merrill and Lindsey, nieces Gloria Lekander and Ginny Smith and their husbands Dennis and Joel, sister-in-law Fern Hultman, and nephew Bruce Robertson. She was preceded in death by her husband John Walford (Wally) Nelson, her oldest son John Carl Nelson, and sisters Nadine Sommerfeld and Lillian Jackman. Shirley grew up in the Great Depression and worked with her sisters to help support the family. She graduated from North Central High School and at age 18 moved to California to attend design school. The money for schooling ran out after a year, but she got the opportunity to work in Billie Rose's Aquacade in Southern California starring Johnny Weismuller and Esther Williams. After another year she moved back to Spokane, but after a short stay went to Washington D.C. for two years where she worked during World War II.

Shirley once again came back to Spokane and then met her husband, Wally, who was working at Gonzaga University. They raised their two sons in Spokane and she went back to work when both boys were in school. She went on to work for the Spokane public schools system at the elementary level for 20 years. She truly loved her job as grade school secretary and all of the little first graders that came through on those first school days each year. When she and Wally retired they began traveling and visited Europe, notably Sweden, Jamaica, and other parts of the United States with their friends.

Shirley was also an excellent seamstress and made many quilts for different charities. She loved living in Spokane and enjoyed biking, going to Priest Lake every summer, cooking for her family, making scrapbooks of their travels and eventually had her two sisters back in Spokane and spent much time together. She attended Salem Lutheran Church for many years and lived the last 14 years of her life at Riverview Retirement Community, before moving to a wonderful adult family home in July of 2008. A Memorial Service will be held at Riverview in the Chapel, 1801 East Upriver Drive, on Saturday, January 31st, 2009 at 2:00pm.

SMITH, Steven Craig

Went home to Jesus, true to form, during the biggest snowstorm on record, December 19, 2008. Heaven has gained a great poet and guitar player. Steve was born October 15, 1942, the second son of Otto and Margaret (Pink) Smith, in Everett, WA. He graduated from Everett High School in 1961 and from Washington State University in 1966. Steve married Rachel Patterson in 1964 and they had three children. He married Lavada Jean (Jeannie) Kissack in 1974, gaining four sons. Steve and Jeannie had two children.

Steve possessed a lifelong love of sports, especially baseball. His playing career spanned from one of the northwests first Little League teams in Kirkland to the Washington State high school All Star Baseball team of 1961. He then coached Little League and Babe Ruth teams in Vancouver and Anacortes for years. Steve went to work for the Washington Water Power in 1983, worked his way up to power house operator, and retired from the Long Lake and Little Falls Dams after his cancer diagnosis in July 2007. He felt that his fellow Avista workers were the greatest guys in the world. Steves other loves included music and farming, especially cattle, advising us all that, if there are cows in heaven, look for me there.

Steve is survived by his wife Jeannie in Cheney, his mother Margaret (Pink) Smith, and his sister Cris (Shannon) Kollmeyer all in Chelan. His surviving children are George Kissack, children Megan and Monica in Buckley. John (Karen) Kissack, children Ashley (Joe) Onigkeit, Adam, Kyle, and Becca in Liberty Lake. Jason (Sarah) Smith children Ryan, Jason Jr., Amanda, Jarron, Zoe, and Tori in Maryland. Adam (Rhonda) Kissack, children Joshua, Jackson, and Roman in Medical Lake. Stephanie Smith in Seattle. Tom Kissack and daughter Hannah in North Carolina. Jesse (Krystal Stephens) Smith in Puyallup. Shea (Jason) Reopelle in Cheney. Surviving nieces are Julie (Dean) Lotz, children Cristine and Michael in Lynnwood. Pauline Smith in Seattle. Kelly (Jason) Underwood in Chelan. His surviving nephew is Aaron Kollmeyer in Chelan. Steve's great grandchildren are Bryce and Brooke Onigkeit in Liberty Lake. Good friends Rachel and Arnie Scown in Leavenworth.

Charities dear to Steves heart are, International Heifer Foundation, Adopt and Elder (Walk in Beauty Program) and the Union Gospel Mission in Spokane. Service will be held April 24, time and place to be announced.

ROOKEY, Margie Ann
(Age 80)

Passed away Saturday, January 3, 2009 in Spokane WA. Margie was born to Chris and Ruth Huber in Seattle WA. Margie grew up all around the Northwest as her father traveled with the Civilian Conservation Corps and her mother taught school. Margie graduated from John Rogers High School and attended WSU. Margie and Ray were active in the community. Margie volunteered with Campfire Girls, Cub Scouts, Women of the Washington Water Power (Ray retired after more than 30 years), Lilac Foundation, Cancer Society Shop, Meals on Wheels, Expo 74 and was an elections volunteer. She enjoyed gardening (especially her begonias), the Symphony, walking, swimming, weekends at the lake, trips to the Oregon Coast, traveling, friends, Christmas, harmonizing to old songs, Friday poker and Macy's half-off sales. Margie was known for her good sense of humor, positive attitude and strong constitution. She was a tough 'ole broad. Margie is survived by her daughter Christie (Kent) Allen; sons Steven (Elissa) and David (Susan); grandchildren Kendal Rookey, Grace Rookey, Amy Allen, Brooke Allen, Elizabeth Rookey and Jacob Rookey; great-grandson Taylor Allen; and sister Patsy Varro. She was preceded in death by her husband of almost 50 years Ray. Margie's family would like to express a special appreciation to Hospice of Spokane for their support during her battle with cancer as well as thanks to her many friends that have supported her throughout her life. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations be made to the Washington Water Power Legacy Scholarship Foundation 1411 E. Mission 99202 or Hospice of Spokane 121 S. Arthur 99202. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Charles Catholic Church 4515 N. Alberta on Thursday, January 8, 2009 at 11:00 a.m.
